As a Man Reads

Dear

Are you experiencing good success? Are you a reader? What are you reading?

Let's explore this topic together in today's devotional:

As a Man Reads

"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." - Joshua 1:8 (NKJV)

Growing up, I was not a reader. I read mostly cartoon books for entertainment purposes, not because my parents did not encourage me to read nor did they incentivise me to do so. This had a negative effect on my personal development and imagination. After dropping out of college and starting my own business, realizing how limited I was in the use of language and a general understanding of concepts that were essential for me to become successful, I began to discipline myself to become a reader starting with motivational books, biographical books, business books, and later history books. I became an avid reader out of necessity, because I did not want to be poor. Reading has been key to my personal growth and development.

Contrary to me, my oldest daughter is an avid reader. Growing up, libraries were her favourite place to visit and books were her favourite hiding place. This has given her an academic advantage as well as made her an effective communicator early. Her confidence in the use of words at an early age was amazing.

Whether you did not grow up reading like me or reading has been a part of your life since childhood like my daughter, becoming a reader can transform your life. We are the sum total of the books we read. Show me a man who reads, I will show you a man who knows. Leaders are readers and readers have a competitive edge in the use of language and the command of words. It expands our imagination, cultivates our intellect and powers our dreams. Reading gives us confidence, shapes our worldview and enables us to learn new things. We are what we read.

As powerful as reading is, what we read is even more important. When I became a reader nothing accelerated my development as the reading of the word of God. It enabled me to tap into the mind of God and get unique insights into the formation of the universe, eternal success principles and God’s plan for my life that nothing else could have done. Before I became a Christian, I read books that taught me best practices of successful living and business but I was limited, I did not learn wisdom and eternal truths, reading the word of God took me beyond natural knowledge into supernatural knowledge. It gave me a unique perspective and an eternal competitive edge. I’m often asked about the college I graduated from and the degrees I've earned, the reading of books and the reading of the Word of God is what made me the man I’m today.

The Lord, in preparing Joshua to succeed Moses, instructed him to read His words day and night so that he may prosper and have good success. (Joshua 1:8)

How is your life and business? Are you experiencing good success? What are you reading

Remember, leaders are readers and readers of the Word of God have an eternal competitive advantage.

My prayer for you today is that God will give you the grace to meditate upon His word day and night so that you may have an eternal advantage in life and business to realize His purpose and plans for your life in the marketplace.

Reflection: Are you meditating upon the Word of God daily?
